Chiwawa Basin hike, July 26 and 27, 2006

On July 26, 2006 I started on the Chiwawa River Trail from Trinity with the intention of climbing Fortress Mountain.

As I passed a trail crew on the way to the Chiwawa Basin, a dog started following me. Though I did nothing to encourage the dog, he followed me to my camp in the basin and would not leave. Figuring he would get hungry, I expected him to leave during the night

During the night there was a very strong and warm wind. The snow melted out from under the edges of my non-free standing tent and it collapsed in the middle of the night.

I’ll never forget getting out of the tent, looking up and seeing the galaxies forming star clouds in the firmament, feeling the hot wind, the sound of the waterfalls, the darkness of the mountains, and the presence of the dog.

The next morning I got up and the dog started following me up the mountain. I decided to go home. The dog followed me all the way down to Trinity.
